Two Coventry firefighters were injured late Wednesday night after their rig was hit along a highway.
They were getting out of their truck at a home off Victory Highway when an oncoming car slammed into the vehicle’s open door, Coventry Capt. Robert Mann told WPRI.
Mann said one firefighter was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with severe injuries. She is expected to recover. The other sustained minor injuries.
The search continues for the driver who fled after the incident. There was no description of the striking vehicle.
“It could’ve gone very badly very quickly. But nothing life-threatening. But they probably have a long way of recovery ahead of them,” Mann told WJAR.
Other firefighters at the scene immediately radioed for help.
Mann asks drivers to slow down and move over for crews operating along the highway.
